In my opinion, I think that a novelist should have diverse and rich backgrounds related to different sciences like philosophy, history, anthropology, psychology and of course sociology. Do you thing that I am right on this judgment?

Well, it depends on what kind of novel you're writing. Of course a writer must have some knowledge, be it scientific or otherwise. In order to create strong, believable characters, who engage in normal, creative, yet tangible relationships and conversations, one must grasp the concept of sociology, a complex science, indeed. Also, a good character is complex, full of twists and issues, and it also has a bit of a cliche, because, well, it usually does. Therefore, psychology is essential. You don't have to be an expert in any of these fields, but you must know how to balance your knowledge and apply it where it is needed most. About History, Anthropology and Philosophy, I am not so sure, I mean, I personally love such books, but it all depends on what you're writing. If you want to create a deep historical background for the characters and their families, and you want to be accurate or at least in line with reality, than history is a definite must-know. The same goes for the others. But once again, do not forget who you are, do not forget what truly lies in your own soul, for that is the source of writing. Science helps, yes, but is not the first way carriage to success, the greatest novels are spawned from the heart, not the mind.

I am most forlorn in light of your assessment.
I think your being way too judgmental. Writers are creative people. They draw from life and inspiration as it is, and I don't think there should be any type of a label or requirement on any artist - no matter what their focus of art is! If they are a great writer, and you enjoy the work, why should it matter what their background is? Sure being intelligent, well rounded, well traveled, and diverse in numerous subjects never hurts anyone in ANY field! But in general these people are driven to that knowldege anyways! But I don't think anyone has a right to really judge someone if they've never studied something, unless the information in the book/novel are completely based off speculation, instead of actual research...but we are talking about a NOVEL here, not a work of non-fiction, which requires a different approach to write. The same could be said about painters, designers, or other types of artists too!
