How can I take the background out of an image where I just have the image by itself?

I don't have photoshop I'm on dial up so I can't download a trial or anything. I don't want to buy it cause I just need a few backgrounds cut out of a few images. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anykind of similar software that would cut the image out? I need these images fixed really bad so any help would be greatly appreciated.

you could use the paint program that comes with most computers and white out the background

Well, you could open it up in paint, zoom in, and erase the background very meticulously
operations like this can only be made with some specialized software ..like paint shop pro...its the only way if u want to have a quality fix to ur picture
There is a free trial version of paint shop pro available you can try and download that. the size isnt that large so i think you should be able to download it on dial up...
Brute force using the eraser feature in any paint program. But it's a lot of work and far from a crisp result. First you would magnify the image many times so that you can see the individual pixels and then use the finest eraser setting you have. If the background were uniformly the same color, you could sample that color and then try to select based on that color and then change it to white. But pixels within the desired foreground image would probably be disturbed.
