Is there an EASY way to change a graphic to a transparent background?

I don't have special software and don't want to buy expensive software, but would like to change the backgrounds of some graphics for a web page...any ideas?

If you have Microsoft Office, it is very simple. Choose the picture that you want, open one of the programs (Word) and put your picture on the page. Now go to the top and click on "View" then "toolbar". Now choose the "Picture" toolbar. You will see a new toolbar. Put your curser over each tool until it reads "transparent". This is the tool that you will need. Once chosen, put the wand on the part of the picture that you want transparent. The program will do it for you. I hope that this helps

most graphics programs including the free ones will let you save a file as a .gif The gif supports transparancy which means you can set any color on the picture to be transparent.
Unless executed effectively you will have a halo effect around the graphics setting the background transparent. Try using paint if that is all you have. If the graphics are black and white .gifs they are easier to work with. If they are .jpeg you will have trouble coloring in the background.
